Difference Between a Cordless Drill and a Cordless Hammer Drill

Christmas is the time that men love, especially if he is a tool lover. One of the most common gifts given during this time is drills. Now, there are a lot of choices available on the market today and finding the right one is very important. You don't want to buy something that is a overkill do you. Well, today I want to touch on a common question. What is the difference between a cordless drill and a cordless hammer drill? This is a common question that is asked more often or not. Does it really make that much difference? The answer is yes.

Plain cordless drills are machines that rotate a bit in a circular motion as the user provides pressure towards or away from the object that is getting drilled. The bit has groves that latch on and pull through the material. Plain cordless drills are usually used for drilling into wood, vinyl, or softer materials.

On the other hand hammer drills are a much more violent tool. The drill still turns a special drill bit in a circular motion but it also does an extra function, it hummers down on the bit pushing it into the material. These drills are normally used for drilling into concrete or steal material, material that a normal drill would not be able to drill through. It also requires a special drill bit that will not break with so much friction.

A hammer drill is not the perfect tool for someone who just does small jobs around the house. And if the recipient does not ask for this kind of drill I would not purchase it.

So, who makes the better drill between DeWalt and Milwaukee? If you want more bang for the buck then you need to choose DeWalt. DeWalt make a very superior drill that will last over the long haul. The price is also very reasonable. Milwaukee does have a very comparable drill, but Milwaukee drills have a high premium for ownership. They cost a lot of money. And for the type of money spent you could get one or two more options with the Dewalt brand.

In Review: Milwaukee's 2426-22 M12 Cordless Multi-Tool

For decades Milwaukee Electric Tool has been innovating the production industry. Accordingly, they've just released a new line of M12 cordless tools that are making a quite notable impact on the community. Among the new M12 (12v) releases is their 2426-22 cordless oscillating multi-tool, a small piece of power tool with huge versatility and remarkable performance.

It is a project that can include the whole family, and with the help of Milwaukee power tools you can get the project done without stress. Milwaukee Contractor Bag Review

This review is for the Milwaukee contractor's bag that came in the V28 Combo kit model number 0928-29. You can also buy this tool bag separately which is model number 48-55-3530. When first looking at the bag you will notice that it is rather large, which is good. The dimensions are 24.53 L x 133 W x 143 H. This bag is made out of 600 denier material, so it is water resistant, not water proof which you don't want for power tool storage. Never buy an tool bag that is water proof, because your tools will not be able to breath. If your tools can not breath, the moisture will eat away at your tools.

One aspect we liked a lot was all the pockets. On the outside there are plenty of pockets to store hand tools for easy access. The outside also has two hand straps to carry the bag or one large shoulder strap. Once you open the Milwaukee contractor bag, you will notice the large amount of room that fits the Combo, with room left over for other items. On the inside of the tool bag, there are even more pockets to store items. This is a nice feature, now instead of all your tools at the bottom of the bag, you can easily access them. With all the tools from the kit plus any additional hand tools you will be putting in the bag, you might look at a weight of 50lbs. at most. So for our test we wanted to over load the bag and see what happens.

For our power tool test of the Milwaukee contractor bag, we loaded the bag with 2-50lb. salt bags. As a user, I am not sure anyone will be walking around with 100lbs. of tools in this bag, but it would be nice to know if it can handle this amount of weight. After we loaded the bag with this weight, we just picked it off the ground and moved it up and down to make sure the bottom didn't break or the handles didn't snap. We weren't sure, but the bag was fine and held up. Now some might say why didn't you swing the bag around and try to get it to break. Our response is if you can easily swing around 100lbs of power tools or have the need to do this, you might want to think about joining the Olympic weight lifting team!

Cordless Impact Driver - It's Not What You Think

What is an Impact Driver?

This is the perfect tool if you are going to drive a lot of screws, say build a deck or drywall a room. An impact driver will greatly speed up a large construction project. But they are not for everyone. There is a lot of confusion over the new impact drivers. These cordless tools are not for removing nuts and bolts, but a tool for speeding up your home remodeling and construction projects.

Basically they are high speed screwdrivers or drill/drivers that give the screw a little "tap" as it is being set. They allow you to quickly and easily screw in even the longest screw.

Impact drivers are not impact wrenches. Impact wrenches are the noise you hear from the garage when you have you car repaired and mechanics typically use them to quickly loosen and tighten large bolts and nuts.

Another confusion for you when searching on net is the original impact drivers are manual. You hit them with a hammer to loosen stuck nuts and bolts.

Impact drivers are rated in inch/pounds. Besides the inch/pound rating some manufactures also list the RPM and beats per minute.

Do you need an Impact Driver?

Impact drivers or impact screwdrivers are not for everyone. They do take a little practice to use them consistently without stripping the screw, sinking the screw too far or bending the screw and not getting it set correctly. If you do buy one and haven't used one before, take some scrap wood and the screws you will be using and drive a few dozen to get used to how it works.

Remember, just like using your drill/driver, if you are screwing into trim, hardwoods or even thinner pieces of pine, always pilot drill the hole or you may end up splitting the wood. To make the screw go into hardwoods easier, my secret is to this is to put a little bar soap on the threads. I keep a bar of Ivory soap right with my assortment of screws.

A cordless impact driver works really well for sheet metal construction like installing a tin roof, drywall on metal studs, and metal barn siding. Most are powerful enough to drive lag bolts and sensitive enough to drive sheet metal screws into duct work. In combination with your drill/driver these impact drivers will greatly speed up your home remodeling tasks.

Reviews

I have had a chance to use or demo quite a few of these wonderful tools in the last few months. These included drivers by Bosch, Craftsman, Hitachi, Makita, Milwaukee, Dewalt, and the new Panasonic.

Of course the Panasonic is the best, but it also is the most expensive. The three speeds make this the most versatile. The Craftsman Professional was the hardest for me to use. I stripped the heads out of a lot of screws trying to drive them into pine. It also broke 1/4 inch stove bolts before I could get my finger off the trigger. The Craftsman C3 19.2 volt lithium and the Milwaukee Lithium were good tools at a good value for me. They are available by themselves or in a drill/driver/battery combination kit.

The Craftsman NEXTEC was the least powerful, but it is intended for the beginning homeowner so I really can't compare it to the rest. If you already have a NEXTEC auto hammer or multi-tool buy this one because the batteries are interchangeable, otherwise buy the 19.2 Craftsman or the Milwaukee.

The rest I tried all work about the same so if you like Makita, buy a Makita.

Unless you have an existing drill/driver that still has good battery packs (say, buy an 18v Dewalt impact driver if you have a good 18 volt Dewalt Drill) I would strongly suggest going with the impact drivers that have the new lithium ion batteries. These impact drivers are much lighter in weight than Ni-cad powered ones and recharge quickly.

The best deal currently is the Milwaukee 2691-22 Combo kit. I know hundreds (yes hundreds) of contractors that use this drill and they all like it for the weight/power/battery ratio.
